Working for the protection of vulnerable children in Cambodia

It is extremely important to Our Home that efforts are made towards sustainable development, and towards supporting families to the end that they can later support themselves. Our Home works towards encouraging prevention of societal problems as well as providing protection in cases of abuse or poverty.

To this end, Our Home has a number of projects running which provide assistance to parents (along with their children), in the form of vocational training, awareness raising, or family reconciliation, to try to enable families to have the chance to generate more income, protect themselves better and avoid future family trauma. Children are also able to help with peer education.

The tailoring program in Takeo

Our Home is currently setting up a tailoring program, which focuses (through responsible methods) on those families with deepest income poverty and lack of skills, as those who are most at risk of withdrawing children from school to work for the family. It also prioritizes women, to give them an opportunity to learn skills lacking. Women enroll for six months, and at the end of this time a new group enters the center. Women not only have the chance to learn tailoring skills, but are also trained in microbusiness and market development. In this way, they are given the chance to learn about making an income for their family. This encourages empowerment and sustainable development in Takeo and less reliance on outside assistance.

The agriculture program in Takeo

Our Home is setting up an agriculture program, which again focuses on the poorest families as those most at risk of withdrawing children from school to work for the family. Participants enroll for six months, at the end of which time a new group joins. Participants not only have the chance to learn agricultural skills, but are also supplied with equipment and land over the given period. They can then go and work on their own land and use the income gained to input into future opportunities. Participants are also trained in microbusiness and market development. In this way, they are given the chance to learn about making an income for their family. This encourages empowerment and sustainable development in Takeo and less reliance on outside assistance.

Healthcare and sanitation in Takeo

Along with healthcare provision to children in Takeo, Our Home enables parents to attend awareness raising and training, to increase coverage of information and the ability to prevent diseases and to care correctly for the sick. Our Home is also in the process of establishing clean water wells in 10 locations, and providing wind power generation of electricity for the poorest families, which helps families ensure sanitation for their families. This also gives opportunities for income generation. Our Home makes efforts to make such supply sustainable, through the set up of user groups and community committees.

Family counseling and reconciliation in Phnom Penh, Takeo and Kompong Speu

Our Home facilitates family reconciliation and counseling for parents in all of areas, to allow children to be reintegrated. Experienced trainers and counselors are able to help parents avoid risk-filled situations in the future, and to learn about ensuring a sustainable future for their children and themselves.
