Our
Home, a Khmer-run NGO, was initiated in Phnom Penh City in 1999 with the
objective of assisting vulnerable children and those who had been victims
of poverty, abuse, delinquency, violence and neglect.
Since then, it has spread to rural Takeo and Kompong Speu provinces,
offering support and assistance to thousands of children and their families,
through education, shelter, healthcare, and vocational and awareness-raising
training to empower people towards sustainable development for all.
Cambodia's
history is one of civil war, genocide and political disruption. Currently,
Cambodia is a developing country, and GDP is improving. However, the gap
between rich and poor is also increasing, and many cases of assistance
are not reaching the target. In Cambodia, most of the population (95%)
is involved in rural agriculture. Weak infrastructure and poor investment
in agriculture and rural development have meant that many of this group
are still struggling to reach an income of US$1 per day. As a result,
many migrate to the cities to find work. However, there are difficulties
in the cities also: education levels are still low, and it is difficult
to obtain jobs in the new and small private sector. Working for the public
sector is very poorly paid. Healthcare is extremely expensive, and many
families find themselves spiraling into debt.
Poverty in Cambodia is characterized by low income and consumption, poor
nutritional status, low educational attainment, low access to public services
including school and health services, low access to economic opportunities,
vulnerability to external shocks, and exclusion from economic, social
and political processes. The relatively high prevalence of HIV/AIDS in
Cambodia is an additional challenge to the current human development situation.
Our
Home is working to support the children of Cambodia to overcome these
hurdles, providing shelter, healthcare, counseling, support, and opportunities
for thousands of children in education and vocational training. In addition,
Our Home supports poor families through training programs and awareness
raising, so that they are better able to support their children for a
better future.
